After five happy years of marriage in New York with Alberto and their young son, Anna Ribera returns to Spain to take her project Velvet to the next level.

She and Alberto had been managing all things Velvet from across the ocean and, together with their best friends and partners, had made a name for Velvet as the number one address in the world of fashion and innovation.

Now they decide to take the next step and turn their reputation into a franchise, first at home, then abroad.

There, the second Velvet Fashion Store is about to open its gates, managed by Anas good friend Clara who had made it up the career ladder from seamstress to directorial assistant in the Madrid Velvet years.

As a critic, I can in no way recommend this show to people as being well-written, well-acted, or even transpiring in a world that allows you to suspend your disbelief.

This show is has the dramatic depth of a butter commercial and the production values of a private high schools spring play.

Still, its really fun and has managed to keep my interest longer than some of AMCs celebrated Sunday night content.

After being swept away by the intense political drama of Isabel and burning my way through the absolutely delicious The Time In Between, Netflixs algorithms got the idea that I was a big fan of Spanish soap operas.

Note: Im not watching telenovelas.

Rather, I am evidently really into primetime soap operas made in Spain.).

It centers on the drama at an upscale Madrid department store in the 1950s.

After years abroad, the (very hot) prodigal son Alberto (played by Sense8 s Miguel Angel Silvestre ) has returned home to his familys store.

The problem is he doesnt want to continue his fathers legacy in the business.

No, he wants to reconnect with his childhood sweetheart Ana, a headstrong seamstress who grew up downstairs with the other employees.

At its best, its a compelling human drama full of exciting narrative twists.

The terrible matte backgrounds could pull you out of the story, but after a while, it feels like the show is trying to pull you into an old school Hollywood dream.

The show also benefits from a few outstanding performances and a couple of compelling side characters.

In fact, you could say that Alberto and Ana are the least interesting characters in Velvet.

Everyone in this world wants to find love, get ahead, and feel values.

Naturally, drama erupts, and oh boy, do I love some good old fashioned catty drama.

Velvet Serial Series My Family

Velvet s tone reminds me of classic Aaron Spelling fare or some of the lavish 80s mini-series my family would watch.

So it is that the same qualities that might push a modern viewer away from Velvet are the ones that pull me in.

This show is so different from anything on network or cable that it feels like a delightful dream.

In this world, we have so much weighing us down isnt it okay if our TV time helps us tune out.
